International Badge Day: A Time to Remember

International Badge Day was established in 1997 by the National Panhellenic Conference to set aside a day for women around the world to wear their sorority badges or Greek letters in celebration of sisterhood.

Fellowship, leadership and a lifelong commitment to community service are the daily themes in the lives of sorority women — from collegiate members to alumnae.

On Monday, March 5, these women — who number in the millions — will celebrate International Badge Day during National Women’s History Month. On that day, all of us will honor our separate and distinct Greek-letter affiliations by wearing our badges or letters.

This year’s theme is: “Wear Your Letters on Your Heart.” Thanks to Abby Cowart of Spring Hill College for designing the logo and coming up with the theme.

Join us in celebrating by wearing your badge and inviting all sorority women you know to do the same!

Whether you are for or against this sugar-filled holiday, the ladies of Beta Beta would like to wish you all a fantastic Valentine's Day!

As Delta Gammas, we use this holiday to celebrate love, especially in the forms of friendship and sisterhood.

All the Valentines, candy grams, surprises waiting by the door, adorable wake-up texts, and hidden chocolates in my school bag made my day a thousand times better. However, as cliché as this may sound, I can honestly say that being part of the Beta Beta chapter makes every day feel like it's Valentine's Day. A supportive hug, a little note in the mailbox, a conversation over a cup of coffee, or simply a warm smile are just a few of the things our sisters constatly share with each other, making every single day be that much more special.

Turn Valentine's into a yearlong holiday. Remember to smile, embrace the little things, spread the love, and do good!

Anchor Ball 2012

Whoever said beauty is only skin deep never met any of the Beta Beta DG sisters. Not only did everyone look as gorgeous as ever at Anchor Ball 2012, held on February 4^th, but the various awards given out prove that there is so much more than meets the eye to all these fabulous women. DGs are known for being well-rounded and gifted, so here’s a shout out to all the winners and nominees, and of course, to Krista Burdeyney for organizing it!

New Member of the Year went to the lovely and full of Panhellenic spirit, Grace Court. Active Member of the year was shared by the dedicated Lindsay Vandenberghe and Erin Earles. The Behind the Scenes award recognized the talented and hardworking Nicole Powell and Jasmine Abbey. Alumnae of the Year went to Jenn Anderson-Wong, while the Sports Award was shared between the athletic Annie Cai and Sam Harper. Chapter Programming Award for a New Member went to the enthusiastic Jenn Gyoba, and for the Active Member, the culturally involved Sarah Flowers. The Happy Hannah Award went to chapter’s eternal ray of sunshine, Sarjenka Kuryliw. In the Academic Awards, New Member Scholarship went to the utterly shocked Christine Fallowfield, and Active Scholarship was given to the incredible Laura Harris. And last, but in no means least, comes the Adele of Anchor Ball, Jasmine Abbey, who in addition to the Behind the Scenes Award also won the Most Improved Scholarship and the Foundation Award.

Anchor Ball 2012 was all about sisterhood and pride. Sisterhood because the night was all about celebrating the bonds that we share and pride because of all that our chapter has accomplished in the past year. The speeches from each of the new member classes were both heartfelt and hilarious, showing that it takes a friend to know you, but only a sister can rap about you, tell you what super power you have, compare you to a Harry Potter character or nominate you for an award at prom.

Here’s to Anchor Ball 2012, it sure gave Anchor Ball 2013 a lot to live up to!

DGs Doing Good: The Great Fight for Sight

Service for Sight has been at the heart of Delta Gamma's philanthropic mission since 1936. The Delta Gamma Foundation has given over $2.8 million in Service for Sight grants to organizations and schools that share our mission.

The Great Fight for Sight was created especially for Delta Gamma, so with every pair of glasses you purchase, TOMS will help give sight to a person in need. One for One.

The Great Fight for Sight will culminate with TOMS announcing alumnae and collegiate winners at Convention 2012 in Indianapolis. This promotion was inspired by Delta Lambda chapter at Mississippi State who showcased TOMS eyewear during their philanthropy round of recruitment.

Open House - Beta Beta house turns 100!

AntiFreeze 2012!

To the readers of Delta Gamma at the University of Alberta,

At the end of every fall semester, Delta Gamma bids adieu to it's outgoing officers and welcomes fresh faces into chapter's leadership positions. While we are all sad to see the outgoing CMT and CCMT go, everyone is also looking forward to the fresh perspective and new ideas that the new officers will bring to their positions.

With that being said, it brings me great sadness to sign off on the chapter website. In August 2009, at the request of then Director of E-Communications Jina Shin (Fall '08), I started "A Day in DG" - a blog that chronicled the daily doings of Beta Beta chapter of Delta Gamma. Fast forward nearly two and a half years and that little blog has become the core of our current website. Thank you to everyone who has supported me as I learned the ins and outs of blogging and tried to use social media in order to display the wonderfulness that is Delta Gamma. Being the chapter blogger - and later, the Director of E-Communications - has given me the opportunity to not only learn about my sisters through their surveys and write-ups, but also relive some of chapter's greatest moments when posting about our many events.

However, it is time for change and so I am thrilled to congratulate Stephanie Guin (Fall '11) on being appointed the new Director of E-Communications. With her own web savviness, I am sure Stephanie will take chapter's social media to new heights! Watch for Steph's blog entries, tweets, and Facebook posts as she assumes her new role.

Thank you again to everyone who has made "A Day in DG" a part of their day since the beginning. I look forward to seeing what a new day (and director) will bring to both chapter and the chapter website.

Class/Teacher: I have immensely enjoyed all of my art history classes. From Art History 255: Survey of Art from the Second Half of the Nineteenth Century to Art History 302: Vision and Visuality, every art history class I have taken has been my favourite class of the semester by far! Professor-wise, I loved learning from Dr. Steven Harris, Andrea Korda, Professor Liann McTavish and (anthropology professor) Dr. Heather Young Leslie. Each of them were immensely passionate about their subject area and because of them, I learned to be passionate about it too.

Experience Outside of DG: For my twenty-first birthday, my older sister and I flew to New York for a week of shopping and sight-seeing. Some of my favourite memories from that trip include going to the Metropolitan Museum of Art to see the "Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty" exhibition and visiting the Lilly Pulitzer store on Madison Avenue!

DG Activity or Event: After being in Delta Gamma for four years, it's difficult to choose just one event! My absolute favourite, however, would have to be Big and Little reveal week. After a nerve-wracking week for Big and Little Sisters alike, I love seeing all the Littles discover the identity of their Big Sisters! It's so fun to see everyone's reactions - the facial expressions are priceless!

1) Imagine you didn't have DG in your life. Describe your personality/life.

I joined Delta Gamma in the fall of 2008 as a shy and unsure first year university student. Without Delta Gamma, I'm sure I would have continued down that same quiet and unassuming path. Becoming a member of the Beta Beta chapter has allowed me to grow as an individual while getting more involved on campus and in the community. It has essentially served as an anchor for me as I've experienced the ups and downs of life over the past four years.

2) What about DG will you miss the most?

Once again, it's hard to choose just one thing! I will miss visiting with everyone on Monday nights and catching up after a busy weekend. I will miss seeing smiling sisters on campus as I rush from class to class (or from Starbucks to class). Most of all I will miss the sense of belonging Delta Gamma provided me with during university.

To the New Member class of Fall 2008,

It seems so funny that we are now the seniors! Four short years ago, we were all wearing our pink Bid Day shirts while posing for the first of many photos and learning to do the sailor salute. We went through the New Member period together, learning about Delta Gamma and one another. We shared some laughs and made memories that will last us a lifetime. From recruitment to Anchor Ball, Big and Little to Barn Dance, I have had some of the best times with the women who have been with me since I first joined Delta Gamma! Fast forward a few months from that first Bid Day and we officially became sisters at our initiation. It was then that DG truly became my second family thanks to all of you. I have been so privileged to have gotten to know each and every one of you. We may not all be the closest of friends, but I valued what time I shared with each of you. You are all incredible, inspiring women and I look forward to seeing what our weird and wild class will accomplish in the future! I would be super uninvolved in campus life, I would do the bear minimum and would be trying to just get my degree and get out. I would not take pride in my schooling or have any aspirations for myself, and would lack the confidence to know I can achieve anything.

I will miss living in the house, being constantly surrounded by DG and sisters. It is amazing to have random chats with everyone as they drop by DG between classes. There are so many fun / silly things that happen there that I will miss and just won't be the same if I live anywhere else.

3) Leave a message for chapter - what are your hopes for DG?
My message to chapter is to let DG inspire you. So many of us won't open ourselves up to the whole experience. There can be tough times but at the end of 4 years that won't be what you remember. It is the time spent with sisters and the time given to bettering the chapter. The volunteer events (although some at 5am), are some of the best memories I have. Get involved and truly make it your mission to find a deeper meaning in DG and not just let it have a surface effect on you. It has the power to change your life so let it.

Class/Teacher: Design for the Theater with Lee Livingstone, Robert Shannon, Guido Tondino, and my personal favorite Colin Winslow. There are few people in the world that are true masters of their craft; and without a doubt Colin has dedicated his life to perfecting his. There has never been an instance where I learned so much so quickly –and found the time to be constantly inspired by the still active imagination of a 75 year old professor. I will carry the lessons he imparted upon us for the rest of my professional career.

Experience Outside of DG: During April of 2010, I flew to Montreal to visit friends: enjoy the city, and of course absorb the thriving theatrical culture. Along the way, I managed to shake hands with a Technical Director who would later become my boss as I spent the summer touring greater Montreal with one of my all time favorite plays.

DG Activity or Event: Big and Little has to be, without a doubt, my all time favorite DG event. It was thrilling and nerve-wracking as a new member, and even more so as a big sister! Many of my favorite memories come from this hectic week in the DG calendar.

QUICK QUESTIONS

1) Imagine you didn't have DG in your life. Describe your personality/life.

When I joined Delta Gamma in my second year at the University, I was just beginning what I can now describe as the most trying year of my life both academically and personally. With no ties to the city and a burning passion for big city life – I would have found myself transferring to the National Theater School, or leaving to begin apprenticing the union as a stage manager. Delta Gamma has literally been my anchor to this snowy city; and without it I can hardly imagine I would have ever stuck around to see it at its best. I think those that know me would agree that my personality is stubborn at best, and with or without DG I would carry the energy and passion for my friends, family, and career that I do today. I’m thankful that this question on the survey is only speculation; because I would hate to be living my life without the incredible women I now know-by my side to face growing-up together.

2) What about DG will you miss the most?

There is something so incredibly effortless about the loyalty, friendship, and support that comes with being active in chapter. I will miss coffee dates to catch up, sunshines just because, and the optimism that comes with forging friendship within the organization.

3) Leave a message for chapter - what are your hopes for DG?

I hope that every member of DG both current and classes to come are able to find the moment where you can step outside of yourself; and appreciate fully all that Delta Gamma offers. We often speak of ‘doing good’ and of being involved and active within the community and campus –but in retrospect it will not be these things we cherish most as we move forward in our lives. I hope that members will hold in high regard; the organization that held them to their highest standard, pushed them to their personal best, and cultivated and enlightened the minds of some of the strongest women in our society. That is what Delta Gamma is for me, and I hope that in years to come others can say the same.

Where in the World are DGs? Jina (Fall '08): Toronto

I can’t believe it’s been almost a year since I stepped outside of that plane for the first time in the big T.O. After a hectic year as Chapter President, I thought things would wind down but boy, was I in for a surprise!

For those of you that don’t know me, my name is Jina Shin. I’m in 4^th year of my Bachelor of Commerce Co-op degree. I pledged in Fall 2008 with my amazing pledge sisters. I applied to the Cooperative Education program and got my first job offer at TELUS in Toronto. I thought it was going to be a quick four-month co-op term but little did I know that I would be a Torontonian for a whole year!

As boring as it may be, I have to talk about my job. About two months after my first day, my boss offered to extend me for the rest of the year and I accepted without hesitation because I had grown to love the company so much. When I first joined the team, there wasn’t a solid reporting structure within the team and this is where I grounded my feet and built something I never thought I was capable of doing. Now, I have regular interactions with various OEMs (companies, like RIM, Samsung, etc), and also with internal stakeholders. One of the privileges of the job is that I get to work directly with my manager and director, which doesn’t happen often to co-ops, especially in a big company like TELUS. Though I can’t tell you everything I’ve done – because I will turn this into a novel - I can tell you that this past year has changed my life.

Like many other University students, I had no idea what I wanted to do, or even what I didn’t want to do. But after this year of full-time work experience, I know what I want to do and what I need to do in order to get there. It’s a secret that I will keep until I get there, but maybe I can share with you over a cup of tea someday.

Aside from working hard, I never find enough time to do all the fun things I want to do. Toronto is just full of EVERYTHING! It is a home to so many different cultures, making the city colourful and full of amazing food. Other than trying new restaurants, especially during Summerlicious and Winterlicious, my friends and I like to go to events like Nuit Blanche or the Indy. There is always something new I find out about this beautiful city.

More great things about T.O: It is so close to cool cities like Montreal, New York, Chicago, and Boston. I got to do some travelling – to Montreal, Chicago, Miami are the big ones – and it’s amazing. Travelling has always been my passion so even though they are just to Canada and the US, I had so much fun.

Chicago

Before my co-op term started, I was heavily involved with DG so I took for granted the love and the support I received from my sisters. It was very different and odd to be walking home to silence when I was living with 6 other girls before. At first, I really missed ordering delivery food from Boston Pizza and going to study dates with the girls, and did what any other DG would do. I reached out to the Toronto alumnae chapter and the Wilfrid Laurier collegiate chapter. One alumna, who funny enough was a Beta Beta alumna, took me out to lunch and showed me around the city. Even though I was on the other side of the country, I felt so loved and cared for. Then I went to Waterloo to visit the Laurier chapter, and it was exactly like going to a Beta Beta chapter meeting! It was loud at times, girls laughing, hugging, and welcoming me into their home. I made some amazing friends who I hope to be in touch with for a very long time. It really felt real to me that as a DG, I am a DG to any other DGs: something not a lot of people are lucky enough to have.

All my fun experiences aside, I am sad to leave TELUS and the friends I made in Toronto. I will miss everything and everyone so much, but I am so excited to see my family and friends again.

Without DG I would not have a direction in life. DG came at a perfect time for me when I was getting involved with friends that did not have my best interests at heart. Now I have sisters who I care for and who care for me and help me strive to be the best person I can be.

Seeing all of my nearest and dearest on a regular basis. Life gets busy and it is nice to ensure that I have a common ground that time is made to come together :(

If i didn't have DG in my life I feel my personal life would be very empty. I don't believe I would of given back to the community as much as I have through Delta Gamma. I believe university would feel a lot different. University would feel a lot bigger as i would not see members of the Greek community as I walked to my classes. I also wouldn't have known sisters in my class or have made as much friends as I have throughout my university experience. My life would not be as complete if it wasn't for Delta Gamma.

2) What about DG will you miss the most?

Seeing the girls at Monday meeting and contributing through positions. Being a part of CMT was an amazing experience and made me such a better member of chapter. I am going to miss those CMT meetings as well as chapter meetings. They always brought a smile to my face and made my day.

3) Leave a message for chapter - what are your hopes for DG?

I hope that the girls in chapter enjoy their time in DG and respect each other. Your love for you sisters is what will hold the bonds of sisterhood for years to come and also make chapter stronger. I hope that you guys strive to live everyday by the values of Delta Gamma. I hope that in the years to come Delta Gamma becomes a stronger, connected chapter that continues to DO GOOD! I hope that girls in the future will continue to hold our philanthropy close to their hearts. I hope you continue to give back in your community and continue to help members of the blind community. Anchor Thud Week 2011!

What are your plans this week? If they include serenading Delta Gamma president Mallory McMurtrie (Fall '07), raising awareness about vision loss, showing some serious anchor spirit, and spending a day at West Pool, you're probably planning to attend Anchor Thud Week 2011. The biggest philanthropy event on the University of Alberta campus, the twenty-seventh annual Anchor Splash is going to be better than ever before! This year's Anchor Thud Week includes old favourites such as Serenade the President and exciting new events such as Anchor Auction. MONDAY, OCTOBER 17: Serenade the President
The kickoff to Anchor Thud Week, Serenade allows teams to show off their musical talents (or lack thereof). Teams come to Delta Gamma starting at 8 p.m. to sing about our President, DG, Anchor Splash, and anything else related to Delta Gamma that they can think to include in their original song!

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 18: Beautiful Eyes Competition
The second day of Anchor Thud Week focuses on raising awareness about vision, vision loss, and prevention. Each team submits a jar that is used to collect points in the form of coins. All pocket change is welcome, so stop by and donate some change to your favourite pair of eyes! Look for the Beautiful Eyes booth from 10-4 p.m. in SUB on this day.

WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 19: Eye Glasses Drive

An all day event, the eyeglasses drive gives teams a great way to earn points while doing good. All glasses collected by Anchor Thud teams are refurbished and donated to those who cannot afford to purchase eyewear. The drive runs until 7 p.m. that evening, so there is plenty of time to help others "see the difference"!

THURSDAY, OCTOBER 20: Spirit Day

Spirit Day is another day that allows teams to get creative. This time, however, teams bring out their artistic sides to create a team banner and posters that will be displayed on Saturday at West Pool.

FRIDAY, OCTOBER 21st: Anchor Auction

A new addition to the Anchor Thud Week lineup, Anchor Auction is a silent auction full of amazing items to be bid on. From Delta Gamma gear to unique, handcrafted items and deluxe gift packages, this auction is not to be missed! DGs have also been baking up a storm to provide delicious treats to accompany the delectable auction items. The auction will be occurring from 6 to 8 p.m. in the TELUS building on campus and everyone is welcome to attend!

SATURDAY, OCTOBER 22nd: Anchor Splash

The week's philanthropic festivities cumulate with the event of all events - Anchor Splash! From 2-6 p.m., West Pool on campus will be filled with the sights and sounds of teams competing for Anchor Splash glory. Stop by the pool at any time Saturday afternoon to check out events such as various relay races, the raft race, and infamous synchronized swimming routines.

Delta Gamma Doing Good: Julie Murphy (Fall '10).

A gifted actor and dancer, Julie uses her talents to "do good" at Fort Edmonton's annual Spooktacular. Keep reading to find out how Julie scares the wits out of Edmontonians for a good cause!

"This year during Halloween, I’ll be volunteering as an actor in "Spooktacular". This is my third year of involvement with this amazing event, which is held annually at Fort Edmonton Park. The non-profit Fort Edmonton Park organization is the largest living history museum in Canada. Although it is only open in the spring and summer, they re-open for two nights just before Halloween every year for their renowned Spooktacular event. Ever gone through a walk-through haunted house? Well, Spooktacular is like a walk-through haunted park! Every street in the Park caters to a different age group, and the street I work on is the "scary" one that only customers 14 years and older are allowed to walk down. At last year's Spooktacular, my "haunting" did not involve scaring people in a scenario in one of the many houses that lined the streets, like most actors' did. Instead, I was in charge of entertaining people in the line-ups outside those houses! Creeping up behind people, stalking customers, and chasing patrons down 1885 Street are just a few ways I ensured people got their money's worth. Spooktacular is a safe and fun way for the whole family to become satisfied with their "Halloween cravings," and I plan on acting in it for as long as I can."

Class/Teacher: So hard to choose just one! I'm going to step outside my realm of the English Language Arts and say EAS 208. This class really brought to me the concrete knowledge, facts, and figures to support my previous positions on the climate crisis and earned me a status of obnoxious know it all. Of course you all know of my undying love for Alberto Reyes but alas, his scholarly interests have taken him beyond the University of Alberta so non of you girls will be auspicious enough to witness his *ahem* charm.

Experience Outside of DG: All of the travelling and back packing that I have done has forever etched upon my person an understanding of other human beings that I could never imagine acquiring any other way.

DG Activity or Event: Hands down, the year that Sasha Fierce took Alpha Gam Man by storm and dominated in our double drag. Unparalleled.

QUICK QUESTIONS

1) Imagine you didn't have DG in your life. Describe your personality/life:

I think I would understand women and their mannerisms even less than I already do. Just beginning to scratch that surface... I think the one thing that DG has somewhat taught me (and by this I mean I am not a diligent student so am still in the process of learning) is how to deal with all kinds of people. So... very... many... people. There will be times in your life when you will meet people you just do not get along with or share the same opinion with and you have to prevent yourself from being petty and just try and empathize. So I'd probably be even more annoyingly hard headed. I've mellowed out a bit right guys?

2) What about DG will you miss the most?

Hmm again this is tough... Remember how I said that in DG you will meet ALL OF THE PEOPLE EVER? Well I think I really appreciate that we have such a diverse chapter and I've taken away something from all of you ladies that I have met. I've learned that not everyone is like me and will hold the same passionate beliefs and understandings. I will miss being exposed (ha) to all of our fantastic members each with talents specific to them.

3) Leave a message for chapter - what are your hopes for DG?

Oh boy, I will try to keep this short. I hope that every single woman that walks through this door realizes the great potential that this chapter has to be a nurturing environment to grow. You are a group of 60 women, all powerful and valuable in your own way and we have the capability to make great changes in the world. Never, ever, ever, stop learning. Remember that you are all attending a university, the knowledge of the universe that mankind has accumulated is literally at your fingertips. Take advantage of you position in society and take classes that make you question, don't just shuffle through the easiest G.P.A. boosters you can find, challenge yourself. There are places in the world where women are not allowed to learn how to read so revel in your freedom, soak up as much knowledge as you can so that you can come away from this experience an enlightened being. The will power and determination of one human being can have tremendous effects on society, just imagine what 60 well educated, upper middle class women can accomplish if they all set their minds to it!

"This past summer, I was able to attend the Undergraduate Inter-Fraternal Institute (UIFI) - a week-long leadership conference that focused on fraternity life. I was able to attend this conference because I was awarded a scholarship by Delta Gamma. While I was in Indiana, I was able to connect with other leaders within the Greek community from all across North America, including some fellow DG sisters (there was ten of us there)! One of the main things that I learned by attending UIFI was that as a member of Delta Gamma, I am always wearing my letters. I now know that I will always be representing Delta Gamma. After all, I will always be anchored and always a Delta Gamma".

Last week during Orientation, several sisters from Beta Beta chapter helped welcome new students to the University of Alberta! Were you one of those lucky students? Lindsay Howes (Fall '10), Serena Tang (Fall '10), and Erin Earles (Fall '09) were all volunteers with the Orientation Program. Lindsay and Serena had signed up to represent their faculties - ALES and Arts, respectively - as Orientation Leaders. The two DGs welcomed new students to campus, gave tours, and answered questions about the university and campus life. Erin, on the other hand, served as an Orientation Presentation Facilitator and starred as Harriet Potter in the presentation on academics.

Sisterhood Sunday!

After a busy week of classes and Clubs' Fair, DGs spent Sunday at our home away from home - the Delta Gamma house. Sisters enjoyed catching up and finalizing preparations for recruitment. We can't believe it's already beginning on Wednesday! We are so excited to meet all of the amazing women coming through recruitment over the next two weeks and introduce everyone to the many aspects of Greek life including sisterhood, philanthropy, scholarship, and leadership.

A few months ago, sorority women everywhere watched with bated breath as Janie from Lilly Pulitzer announced the five sororities who would be represented in the next batch of Lilly prints. Delta Gamma was one of the lucky winners and we are so excited that our print is finally here! Now to just wait for the actual items to be released during the holiday season...Congratulations to the other sororities who also won the Greek Chic contest - we can't wait to see everyone showing their Lilly love and Panhellenic pride with a sorority print!

Each year before school begins, DGs come together to reconnect and prepare for one of the most exciting times of the year - formal recruitment! This year, sisters spent Saturday at the home of VP: Membership Cait Chalmers (Fall '08). A second day of retreat fun was held at the home of Sarah Flowers (Fall '08) on Sunday. Thank you to both members for opening up their homes to chapter for the weekend! Another big thank you gets extended to the recruitment crew, who put in hours of hard work both prior to and during this year's retreat. Thanks to Jasmine Abbey (Winter '10), Kelsey Mills (Fall '09), Nicole Powell (Fall '09), and Bradlyn Wilson (Fall '10) for helping make this year's retreat so successful! Of course, we also can't overlook the contributions of our alumnae. Many women gave up part of their weekend to come and help the active chapter with retreat this past weekend. Beta Beta chapter is unique within the DG family. Out of the 147 collegiate chapters, we are one of only three Canadian chapters! Today Beta Beta - alongside Alpha Phi chapter at the University of British Columbia and Zeta Omicron at Wilfred Laurier - celebrates Canada Day. Hi ladies of Beta Beta!

When I first left for Europe, Sarah Flowers (Fall '08) asked if I would send her a quick entry for ‘Where in the World are DGs’ about what my time in Vienna has been like. I responded that I would, but after I had more time to experience everything! Now that it has been four months, I don’t know where to begin. Going on exchange has easily been the best decision I’ve ever made. I’ve been lucky enough to make some really amazing friends, spend my weekends traveling to cities like Prague, Berlin, and Venice, and my weekdays exploring the beautiful city of Vienna and occasionally attending class. I kept waiting for a time I would feel homesick, but it has yet to happen. From the moment I got to Vienna until now, I’ve been constantly busy; first filling my time with meeting tons of people (mostly other exchange students) and getting oriented with this new city to an endless string of travel days, fun nights out, and lazy days on the Danube Island. If anything, the time is going by too fast! The hardest part is trying to balance how much I travel while still being able to soak up as much Viennese culture and sights as possible. Right now I am writing this from the train, while eating the most delicious Belgian waffle covered in chocolate sauce (counting calories cannot exist in Europe), coming from Brussels and heading to Amsterdam. Two other girls and I have been traveling for the last ten days, first visiting another U of A exchange student in Edinburgh and then traveling over to Glasgow and Dublin. This will be my last longer trip of the semester though as I really want to spend as much time in Vienna has possible before I leave for my one month summer travel on June 21. Saying goodbye to Vienna will be incredibly hard, and even harder to say good bye to all the people I’ve met. Similar to how DG became a family of mine, the exchange students of Haus Erasmus has definitely become a family too and my exchange would not be remotely has meaningful without them.

I was trying to think of a couple good stories to tell you all about different experiences I’ve had while I’ve been over here but it’s hard to narrow it down to just a couple stories (that are also totally appropriate haha). Definitely the best part of every place I traveled to - similar to what makes Vienna great - are the people we’ve met along the way. In almost every city we were lucky enough to meet a lot of local people and experience a little more of what the country’s culture and people are all about. While in Lisbon, I met up with our friend, studying in Vienna but from Lisbon, who brought us to her friend’s place to hang out one night. The following night we were in Porto and were invited to our hostel workers' place for a barbeque with their Portuguese friends! Then, while in Dublin just a few days ago, we met some Dubliners willing to show us some true Irish pubs that makes up a huge part of the Irish culture. The other thing I really have enjoyed while being over here is the ability to see some of the festivals we have been able to attend just because everything is so close. We were able to go to the spring festival (Oktoberfest’s little sister) Fürlingsfest in Munich, and Carnival in Venice! Both were incredibly fun and interesting! I had already been to both cities a few years ago but found them completely different under the festival’s atmosphere.

Once we finish Amsterdam, I’ll be heading back to Vienna for a few weeks but the day after I get back, Aleksa Leszczynski (Fall '08) is flying in for a few days! I am so excited to see her, show her around the city, and get all the news on how you lovely ladies have been doing over the last semester!

Ready for Recruitment?

At Delta Gamma, fall recruitment is one of the best times of the year. Not only is it an opportunity to catch up with other sisters after a summer apart, but it also gives us the chance to meet tons of potential new sisters! This year's recruitment dates have already been released, so if you're interested in going Greek this fall, make sure to jot them down well in advance. Recruitment is a busy time of year for both sororities and Potential New Members (that's any lovely lady who is interested in joining a sorority) so you definitely want to be organized way in advance! If you are interested in going through the Fall 2011 recruitment, here are the dates. We can't believe recruitment starts in just three short months!

September 5-9, 2011: Clubs Fair

Held in the Butterdome and Main Quad

Clubs' Fair is the perfect opportunity to stop by the sorority booths and meet women from all five chapters that reside on the University of Alberta campus. If you're interested in going Greek, make sure to stop by, say hi, and learn more about joining a sorority prior to the start of fall recruitment!

September 14-15, 2011: House Tours

House Tours is the official start of recruitment! A fast-paced, fun-filled event spread over two nights, House Tours give Potential New Members (PNMs) about half an hour to spend at each sorority. In this time, you'll get a tour of each chapter house and learn the basics about each chapter. Please note that you do not have to attend both nights of House Tours, though it is recommended so that you get the chance to speak to as many sisters as possible!

September 17, 2011: Philanthropy Day

Philanthropy Day is exactly as it's title states - a day to learn about each sorority's national philanthropy, as well as hear more about the many local charities each sorority supports. Here at Delta Gamma, we "do good" by donating both time and money to Service for Sight, the Canadian National Institute for the Blind, and the United Way. Philanthropy Day also usually involves doing a craft, so be prepared to unleash your inner Martha Stewart and have some fun with philanthropy during the 45 minute long parties.

September 20, 2011: Chapter Pride Night

This night is dedicated to learning about what makes every sorority unique. While all of the chapters at the University of Alberta are united by the National Panhellenic Conference, each chapter is full of amazing individuals who could become your sisters! Enjoy discussing aspects of sorority life including sisterhood, leadership, and social events during Chapter Pride Night.

September 22. 2011: Preference Night

The final night of recruitment is the most memorable of them all. After a busy two weeks, PNMs get to return to just a few select houses for an hour each, giving you a taste of what it would be like to be a member of a particular chapter. Considered to be the most solemn of all nights, Preference Night allows you to reflect upon what you are looking for in a sorority and what you expect to get from your sorority experience. Always remember that joining a sorority is a lifelong privilege, not just a four year commitment! Don't be shy to ask a sister why she chose her sorority and what makes it special - everyone has a story to share.

September 23, 2011: Bid Day!

After the solemnity of Preference Night, Bid Day is sheer exuberance. Not only it is the day where you will finally join a sorority, but you also finally get to learn what chapters your Recruitment Counsellors are from! Enjoy the Bid Day experience - take lots of pictures with your new sisters and Panhellenic friends! Congratulations on going Greek!

Please note that in order to qualify for a bid from any of the five sororities at the University of Alberta, you must attend at least two days of recruitment (one or both days of House Tours and/or Philanthropy Day) prior to Chapter Pride Night.

Delta Gamma Foundation Scholarship Winner: Cait Chalmers (Fall '08)!

Current Vice President: Membership Cait Chalmers (Fall '08) is the epitome of a Delta Gamma. Not only is she super involved in chapter, but she also boasts a stellar GPA and is involved both on campus and off. It therefore came as no surprise to any of us when Cait was awarded one of the most prestigious scholarships the Delta Gamma Foundation has to offer - the Nannie J Little Memorial Scholarship. Delta Gamma Doing Good: Nora Salem (Fall '10)

Nora has inspired her sisters since first joining Delta Gamma in the fall of 2010. A passionate activist, Nora strives to make the world a better place for animals. Scroll down to read about how her love of all things furry led to heartwarming work with a local animal organization.

I’ve always had a soft spot for animals, and it’s grown with me throughout the years. As a child, I think it may have had more to do with the cute and cuddly factor, but today, my love for them branches from a deep place inside my heart. Behind those cute, cuddly exteriors, are living beings capable of comprehending much more than we often give them credit for. They think, feel, and communicate, without speaking neither our spoken language, nor our body language. Our companion animals, as well as many others, show unconditional compassion towards us which can sometimes seem to exceed that of our fellow human companions. So, I cannot begin to understand how anyone could deny that these living beings are one of the greatest miracles on Earth. And to dare harm them or treat them with contempt, like they are beneath us, is unacceptable. That’s what motivated me to start helping rescue animals with SCARS. I was always looking for the ‘right’ organization, and after doing my research, I knew that the Second Chance Animal Rescue Society was it because they were 100% volunteer run and 100% not-for-profit. Meaning that every single volunteer was volunteering their time and effort solely because of their love for the animals.

SCARS was founded by one of the kindest people I have ever met, Sylvia Christiansen. The purpose of SCARS is to take in animals who have been abused, abandoned, or about to be euthanized, and literally give them a second chance by providing them with a foster home until finding them their perfect ‘furever’ home, where they will live the life that they deserve. When animals are rescued, SCARS provides both medical care and/or behavioral therapy to undo the damage of the previous life they had, and to prepare them for their new homes. When deciding on a home, SCARS puts prospective owners through a strict screening process which insures that the right decision is made. If, by chance, there are any problems after an animal is adopted out, SCARS gladly welcomes them back and begins the screening process again until the right match is found. After learning all of this, and attending orientation, I began volunteering in the fall of 2010 and was thrilled to find the kindness of Sylvia existed in all of the volunteers that I met. My volunteer work consists mainly of helping out with adoption events, or helping fundraise if my schedule does not allow me to be attend them. The scheduling aspect is extremely important because as a university student, and a member of Delta Gamma, life can get very hectic before you can even begin to expect it, and the SCARS crew is very understanding about this.

The Tails on the Trails Pawsathon fundraiser is our annual (and biggest) fundraising event. Last year, I was supposed to be leaving for a summer vacation during the time of the event, so I volunteered my past graphic design skills to create the event’s logo ahead of time. Circumstance held me back from my summer vacation, so I actually ended up being able to volunteer at the event itself, which was very successful, and an extremely heart warming experience to see how the community came together for this great cause. I’m excited to be participating in the event this year by collecting pledges and doing the hour long walk, and I plan to continue with this wonderful organization for many years to come. I was accepted into the Explore program for the summer, which provides Canadian students the opportunity to experience living in a different part of Canada while also getting to study and learn French. One of the best parts is that the Explore program is almost all paid for by a bursary! I got selected to attend the Université du Québec à Trois-Rivières. The program I am in lasts five weeks and includes 3.5 hours of class in the morning, a cultural workshop of your choice in the afternoon, and various trips on the weekends. I haven't taken any French classes in over 5 years, so I went into this with minimal French knowledge, especially in the speaking department! This is also my first time in Quebec.

I have now been here for three weeks and it has been a blast so far! My French has improved a lot. I’ve also learned so much about the Québécois culture; they absolutely LOVE poutine (a dish comprised of French fries, gravy and cheese curds). They do not have the same traffic laws, so DO NOT expect them to stop for you to cross the street (a shout-out to Kelsey Mills (Fall ’09) for giving me a heads up about this!!), and they are very into cultural music and dance. The first weekend we got a tour of the centre-ville (city center) of Trois-Rivières, which is one of the oldest cities in Canada as it was founded in 1634. The second weekend was a trip to Quebec City to spend the day in beautiful Old Quebec. The upcoming weekends involve trips to Parc national de la Mauricie and Montreal! This is an awesome program. I’ve met tons of cool people from all across Canada and I would definitely recommend it to others (you can also get university credits for it!). DG News: Fires in Slave Lake, AB

Every summer, many regions of Canada are affected by devastating forest fires. While firefighting crews work tirelessly to help put them out, some fires can quickly get out of control. The ladies of Beta Beta are currently praying for the people of Slave Lake, Alberta which is the hometown of past chapter President Erika Wahlstrom (Fall '07). The town is currently facing a fierce fire that has essentially surrounded the town and made evacuation impossible, despite the valiant efforts of hundreds of firefighters to gain control of the fire and extinguish it. We DGs hope that everyone in Slave Lake remains out of harm's way during the fires and that the townspeople will be able to get to safer ground soon. Please join us in keeping the town of Slave Lake in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time.

While the town is facing devastation, many of the townspeople were fortunate enough to be evacuated to nearby towns and cities. At this time, we are asking everyone to help the victims of the Slave Lake fires by donating any spare clothing, toiletries, bedding, or towels. Donations can be brought to the Edmonton Emergency Centre, located at 10255 104 Street.

Delta Gamma Doing Good: Alexandra Mounzer

Ally Mounzer (Winter '10) always gives it her all when she decides to get involved with something. Her latest commitment is to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, a charity that is near and dear to her heart. Read on to learn more about both a fabulous DG and getting involved with her amazing cause!

In Her Own Words:

"As a nation, Canada has the highest rate of Multiple Sclerosis in the world. MS is a neurological disorder which slowly eats away at the body’s nervous system, disabling the individual from basic human functions. At some points, the individual is able to carry on life normally, but relapses are common. Because of its unpredictability in cause and occurrence, I chose to take a predictable route in raising money for the MS Walk occurring on May 15^th. Along with friends, family members and sisters, we will be raising money to help assist those who are affected by Multiple Sclerosis. Money raised in the MS Walk (happening Sunday, May 15, 2011) is towards research as well as programs and services across Canada assisting those affected by the disease. Motivation in participating in the walk is present in that research is getting closer to finding a cure. I am moved to fight for progress in this particular cause because it is something that hits close to home, and there is hope that we will be able to help make a difference. MS has affected my family as my aunt passed away from the disease, and my uncle is currently living with it. As both family members are extremely important to me, it is further motivation for me to spread the word about the disease and bring about change. Beta Beta Turns 80!

Once upon a time, in a land of golden fields and growing cities, there was a university. For many years, this institution had banned Greek societies from forming on its campus. One day, to the delight of students, the President of the university decided to life the ban on the previously forbidden societies. A group of like-minded women decided to form Phi Gamma, a women's fraternity. After some time had passed, Phi Gamma was approached by the alumnae of a wonderful international organization. These women were members of Delta Gamma, a renowned club that was known for "Doing Good". The alumnae encouraged the women of Phi Gamma to apply for a charter. On May 9, 1931 Phi Gamma was transformed into the Beta Beta chapter of Delta Gamma, making it the first women's fraternity on campus to be accepted by an international organization.

Eighty magical years later, Beta Beta still exists as a strong chapter with numerous accomplishments. Both the organization and sisters have created bonds that will last a lifetime. From Bid Day to Big and Little Sister Week to Senior Send Off, DGs have built strong relationships and lasting memories based on the ideals of Delta Gamma.

...And they all live happily ever after, anchored in the sisterhood of Delta Gamma.

School's Out for the Summer!

As classes come to an end, the ladies of Delta G are looking forward to the summer break. Sisters of Beta Beta have busy summers ahead - working, attending spring or summer classes, travelling, and (of course) spending time with our sisters. We are all so excited to have completed another successful semester at the University of Alberta and now look forward to having a well-deserved break from the business of student life. Jenna Lee (Fall ’09) is a constant source of inspiration to her sisters as she is always striving to “do good” and make the world a better place. Read on to find out more about this amazing DG's latest efforts!

In Her Own Words:

In September 2011, I will be cutting 12+ inches of my hair to donate to Pantene Beautiful Lengths. Until then, I will be raising money to donate to the Alberta Cancer Foundation, which is “...a movement for cancer-free lives today, tomorrow and forever”. Every dollar donated to the Alberta Cancer Foundation supports cancer research, prevention, screening, and education, as well as the treatment and care of cancer patients in Alberta. Pantene Beautiful Lengths helps the ACF by creating wigs (made from donated hair) to give to cancer patients across North America. I chose to get involved because my family has been affected by cancer a number of times, and as a result, I am a high-risk candidate for breast cancer. I would like to diminish the chances of not only myself dying of cancer, but others as well. Furthermore, my grandpa is currently suffering from lung cancer, so this particular campaign is extremely important to me. The most important thing I have learned throughout this process is that awareness is the first step to change. If the public is not aware of what my cause is about or why I am supporting that cause, it is less likely that they will support me. Learn more about my causes by checking out:
